My analysis of Gaudi’s Casa Mila and its relation to 20th century architecture will be illuminating to myself, my classmates, and the world of design. 20th century architecture is analyzed according to a variety of styles, most notably: Modernism, Art Nouveau, Art Deco, and Post Modernism. The one characteristic that all of these styles share is that each was an attempt to break away from what came before and create a new expression. Atoni Gaudi would most easily be classified as working in the Art Nouveau style. However, one only has to experience his work, Casa Mila in particular, to experience that his expression of this style is one that is truly unique. Working early in the century, he seems to have accomplished what many great architects who followed him aimed to do. Or did he? My analysis will explore in what ways Casa Mila is and is not a unique expression, and how it relates to the work which followed it.
