Pathways, Edges & Boundaries - Design Concept

Today we decided on a design concept for our studio project, Pathways, Edges & Boundaries. This was no small feat as our class contained 3 main research groups and many sub-groups each with their own idea of what was important to focus on. Yet we agreed, on an Interactive, Progressive, Gateway. Our project site is on one edge of campus. Our instillation will empathize this gateway to campus and the studio arts building. It will be a progressive design such that elements increase in some sense the closer they become to the building and the main part of campus. Furthermore our instillation will precipitate an interaction with it by the people who use the space. It will be something beyond a visual display.

To accomplish this interactive, progressive gateway. The class was divided into 5 groups of about 12 people each. Each group will focus on the design and production of a specific area of the project. The groups are named according to the areas that they will be working on. The areas are named according to the role that the play in the progression of the concept.

"The Gateway" is the long parking lot medium closest to the building's edge on the upper left of the site plan above. The next medium over, with the crepe myrtle trees, is "The Oasis". The medium nest to that one is "The Way Station", followed by the next medium, "The Desert". The large planted area running along the edge of the building is aptly named "The Edge"
